SHELBY NORDSTROM

Hello everyone! I’m Shelby, and I am a sophomore at Barnard College studying Economics with an interest in going into education. Coming into college, I wanted to major in English and go to law school, so my plans have changed quite a bit. In my fall semester Freshman year, I took Introduction to Economic Reasoning and realized how much I enjoyed learning about economics! Also during that time, I applied and became a Conference CM, which helped redirect my career plans. My time as a Conference CM was an amazing learning experience as I got to collaborate with experienced, admirable female peers who inspired me at every meeting. This year, as the Conference Logistics chair, I have continued to be inspired by my fellow E-Board members as well as by my fabulous committee members. CWBS has allowed me to dive into campus life and career exploration, all while meeting and learning from new peers!

A Short Interview with Shelby:

What advice would you give to someone interested in joining a committee or taking on a leadership role in CWBS?

As someone who has been on both the interviewee and interviewer side of joining a CWBS committee, I believe you should focus on fostering authenticity in your application. While CWBS does value professional and academic experience, showcasing your personality and work ethic during your interview and application is most important! Additionally, when taking on a leadership role in CWBS, continue to ground your application in originality, but also emphasize what new ideas you can bring to the club and how well you work in a team environment!

How has being on the Conference Committee influenced your professional interests or career goals?

Being a member and chair of the Conference Committee has helped me clarify my professional aspirations. For starters, working with a committee and having to direct them has guided me towards a career in education because I have realized I have a passion for working in administrative roles while helping others thrive with their own work! Moreover, working and listening closely to speakers from a diverse array of professional backgrounds has shown me which industries are most interesting to me and which ones align with my values. Overall, being a part of the Conference Committee has allowed me to understand my strengths and weaknesses, while also informing my professional direction.
