“When working for a startup, there are truly no two days that are the same. I think this can deter some people from startups, but I’ve found that for me, it keeps the work exciting and fresh. I can’t get bored or feel stagnant if each day brings a new project. There is also a massive range in the tasks you’ll be able to have a hand in—some may seem menial and others may feel majorly important for the company, but both types are equally impactful. You’ll also get to touch on many different roles in the business; I’ve primarily focused on marketing but have had experience working on projects related to finance, operations, creative, and strategy. I think working in a startup takes someone who is able to see the value in getting to do all of these things, knowing that in a more corporate position you would likely have a narrower focus.
If you have interest in working for a startup, I’d make a list of all of the companies that excite you and that you would love to work for, even if they aren’t publicly hiring. Then, don’t be afraid to reach out! Many of my positions have come out of being a genuine follower and fan of the company and then expressing my interest in working for them. Working with companies through campus clubs is also a great way to get connected and prove that you would be a great asset to have on their team.” Ilana Rubin, March 2024
